Who remembers this? I have to say, I love old movies and Toho classics are ones that I find especially watchable. Since Godzilla: King of the Monsters came out, I thought I'd reach into Toho history and pull out something a little more obscure.
The multi-purpose warship Atragon or 轟天号 (Gōtengō) comes from the 1963 film '海底軍艦' (literally 'the Undersea Battleship'). Released in the West simply as Atragon, the film saw the introduction of Manda and the eponymous submarine-battleship into the Toho universe, both of whom would appear in later Godzilla films, including Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla: Final Wars. Heavily armed and armoured, the titular submarine was designed to be the ultimate warship, initially envisaged as a war-winning weapon for a nationalist Captain but eventually becoming humanity's last hope against the expansionist Mu Empire. Notable characteristics of Gōtengō are the enormous drill on its bow, its 'Absolute Zero Cannon', as well as its ability to burrow underground and fly, making it one of the few man-made weapon capable of taking on Toho's many kaiju on an almost equal footing - most famously besting Manda twice in its career, both times freezing the titanic sea serpent in its tracks.
