A Greek hoplite was a heavily armed foot soldier in ancient Greece. They were the backbone of the Greek army and fought in a phalanx formation. They wore bronze armor and carried a large round shield, a spear, and a short sword. The phalanx was a tight formation of soldiers, usually eight ranks deep. The hoplites would lock their shields together to create a wall of protection. The first rank of hoplites would hold their spears out over the top of the shields, while the second rank would hold their spears out between the shields of the first rank. This created a wall of spears that was difficult for the enemy to penetrate. The hoplites would advance towards the enemy in the phalanx formation, pushing them back with the wall of shields and spears. If the enemy broke through the phalanx, the hoplites would use their swords to fight in close combat. Hoplites were trained to fight as a unit and to be disciplined in battle. They were known for their bravery and were highly respected in Greek society.
