This is the HMS Polychrest from Post Captain, the second book in the Aubrey-Maturin series. She was known as the "carpenter's mistake;" she was identical fore and aft. She was originally built to carry a rocket, and was built with a rounded stern so that the recoil of firing the rocket would not crush the stern.
