The end goal is to have a two story brick house, perhaps with a little garden of sorts in the backyard. It's shaping up rather nicely, (certainly better than my first attempt!) but it still needs a lot of work before it's done. Complicating matters is the fact that I want to try and build it by gathering every single component by hand. (So no inventory editing, or toggling into Creative mode.) Things left to do:

-Harvest enough reeds to make enough book cases to make a 5x5 library for enchanting.
-Replace all the dirt in the ceiling / "roof" with something else. Most likely wood, but I haven't decided yet.
-Finish the chimney. (I don't like the way it looks currently.)
-Put an ACTUAL roof on the second floor. I want to use steps as seen in the NPC villages, and I'm most likely going to use cobblestone. Course, in order to be able to do that, the second floor needs some walls.
-Find/gather the resources needed to make a brewing stand. (THAT'S gonna be a pain in the @$$! But just think how nice it'll look next to my library..)
-Make some chairs for the living room/crafting area. Maybe piston stools? I heard those look nice.
-Add more furniture to the living room; either that or perhaps some plant life. It's just too empty right now with the one sofa.
-Get my trap-door stairs cover to work

There will probably be other details, but for now, the trap doors have my attention. I've never done anything with redstone circuitry before, so I'll be super-stoked if my first fancy/nice house makes use of it besides just pressure plate doors. All my previous bases were fortification first and fore most. That and crappy dirt cave/hovels... although I do have one small sandstone house out in the dessert that turned out rather cute. It's very small though, so even though it's nice, it doesn't quite fall under the "fancy" category.

Back to the redstone though; what I need it to be able to do is flip a lever on/off, and have it turn another lever on/off. I need to be able to do this from either lever. I was linked a video about redstone, and after watching it as well as a few others, I'm beginning to think it's not possible for it to work in this fashion. So I might have to lay some weird wires to get the dang doors to close. I'll be playing around with redstone in creative to see what I come up with. I just hope this doesn't end up with some ugly extra bulk added to the side of my house...

At least my reed farm is coming along nicely. I might have a complete library very soon! :)

Update #1 : by chobo_rose 04/19/2012 10:22:49 amApr 19th, 2012

Okay! Quite a bit has happened with my house since I last wrote... I meant to do an update sooner, but ah well. :P (I'll be adding new pictures latter tonight.)

For starters, with the exception of the Enchanting table, my library is done! I've left the reed farm out front though, if only because I've kinda grown used to looking out my window and seeing a wall of light green. (lol) I've also walled up the rest of the second floor, thus rendering my trap doors obsolete. However, after having spent so much time and effort on thinking about about redstone, I just moved the trap doors to cover the stairs from the second floor to the roof. I could have easily done without it, and it probably would have looked nicer, but dang it I wanna use some redstone! xD

At this point, things left to do is:

-Put chairs around the dinning room/crafting table
-Pretty up the living room

And that's it. For now I'll be ditching the idea of a brewing stand next to the library, as that space is now taken up with stairs and redstone. Technically I could cram it in there, but it it would look like @$$. :P I'll probably completely get rid of the current redstone set up in the future, as soon as I find an alternate way to use the XNOR gate the folks over in the forum taught me.
If/when I get rid of the restone, I'll go back to my original idea of putting a cobble stone roof over the library part of the second floor, and using the rest of the space as a snipping spot. (I loves me some bow and arrows. I know it's probably super dorky, but I feel like a total boss hitting monsters from far away, or if I can tag one while it's moving. xD)
