The M16 was developed in 1942–1943 as an improved version of the M13 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, featuring greater firepower. Like the M13/M14, the M16 was produced in two variants: the M16 itself, which used the chassis of the M3 half-track armored personnel carrier, and the M17, which was based on the chassis of its slightly different variant, the M5. Apart from the chassis and some details of the armored body configuration, both versions were identical.
