I've made flying machines or hover machines or whatever you want to call them - sort of like the Speeders from Star Wars. Players can build them in a 9x3x3 grid of blocks using certain kinds of blocks and according to certain rules, then fly around with them.

The project is in it's early stages, but I have functioning builds and flying around in all direction (although the speeder itself wont turn). The idea is to make a PvP map down the line with the resources to make the speeders limited, and to add weapons to the speeders.

For now, there's a teaser trailer in form a short story video - and the world download for that simple proof of concept.

Features:
* No mods, texture packs or resource packs required.
* Multi-block structure flying vehicles
* Smooth movement.
* Custom engine sound effects.
* Controlled using viewing direction.
* Speed controls from item use.

There's now a video describing how to build your speeder and a bit about how they work. The video description also has a world download for the proof of concept world used in the teaser video:

You can get it from the project download page, or watch the explanation video here:

A very cool idea. How did you accomplish the smooth movement though? Is the structure a number of blocks offset from the minecart(s) in the middle?

Kind of. The mine cart is detected in a certain configuration with the wind shield which tells the direction of the vessel and then a full copy is made of all the blocks in a 9x3x3 space - coal blocks for engines, polished diorite for hull. Each of those blocks is re-made into a falling sand entity riding on top of another entity, then those are moved to create the smooth movement.

The details are a fair bit more complicated than that, but that's the general theory behind it.
