I built the first version of Munich's Frauenkirche (also Dom zu Unseren Lieben Frau, ger.: Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) back in December 2011, and after Minecraft's height increase the cathedral was enlarged.
Compared to my more recent builds it looked quite disgusting :S, so I decided to modernise it. At first it was meant to only improve minor things, but in the end it became a completly seperate project. The old version can still be found here on PlanetMC.
The original cathedral is the most famous landmark of Munich, and was built between 1468 and 1488 - only in 20 years. However the Welsch Copulas (ger.: foreigen) were added some years later in 1525, because there was a lack of money.
Compared to other gothic cathedrals like the Cologne Cathedral the exterior isn't very ornately, but this leads to a more impressive and enormous build and also to a very light-flooded interior (other gothic cathedrals are very dark inside) . Furthermore the time to build the Frauenkirche was very short compared to for example the Cologne Cathedral which was finished after more than 600 years.
The interior was changed over the course of the years quite often: gothic, then baroque, after that neogothic which was too gothic to still be gothic and finally after World War II again (original) gothic. There were even plans to replace the distinctive copulas with plain vanilla ones, however luckily this was never done - imagine a Munich without the Welsch Copulas!
If you want to get an impression of the interior, I suggest you this official panorama.

But dunno if only I have the impression that Minecrafters only love wood houses and IMO kitsch buildings with more details than the sky has stars.
