When Steve heard about the impeding threat, he wasted no time. He knew how slowly the barbarians would travel, due to their massive numbers, and because they would be stopping to pillage every settlement they find. He knew he had some time.
He gathered up 100 men to mine the finest rock, and set off to the valley, with all his men, and all their rock, to meet his friend once again. They arrived, and found that Steve's friends house was far from the most tactical position, so they settled on the foothill of Nerrith Mountain. They set to work on building a castle that would both intimidate the barbarian horde, and be easy to defend.
It was finished, and although it did not cover the whole valley, Steve was smart. He knew that the barbarian king could not resist attacking it. A colossal castle on the most tactical valley around; the perfect bait. Steve and his 100 took up arms. The earth shook as the horde approached. They took what supplies they had into the citadel, and shut all the portcullises. Most men went to defend the outer wall, with their bows and boiling oil. The first barbarians reached the top of Nerrith Mountain, and in a bloodthirsty frenzy, charged at the keep below. Steve's plan had worked. Not only had the barbarians taken the bait, but the bait happened to be located right behind a mountain, meaning that only a small amount of barbarians could attack the keep at one time, due to the limited traversable paths.
Wave after wave of barbarians reached the wall, and broke like ocean waves on a rock. The siege was looking good for Steve and his friend. The barbarian king finally came, enraged at his army, and at the courage of Steve and his 100, he tore the first Portcullis out with his bare hands, and a thousand barbarians descended on the citadel. The battle however, was far from lost for Steve. The second portcullis held, and the barbarians could advance no farther. His remaining men relentlessly fired on the barbarians, and an arrow hit the barbarian king, fatally. The barbarians, having endured massacre, and with no leader, abandoned the siege, with far too few warriors to conquer anywhere else. Steve had won.
This is a realistic Norman citadel on a mountain, with walls around the front, contains realistic details such as studded doors, and most staircases go clockwise, as they did historically to force any invaders climbing them to fight left handed. Took about 12 hours to build this by hand (my w.e was super glitchy :/). Based off of many norman castles, including Dover castle (Dover, UK) and Saint Michael's Mount (Cornwall, UK). This is the first castle I've ever made, and I had a blast! Thanks to everyone who gave feedback, it's been amazingly positive and encouraging :D
