it would work in survival but its not very effective you would need to go get a bucket of lava every time you wanted to make more obsidian. its just really not worth the effect of transporting one bucket of lava to make one thing of obsidian. thats just my opinion though.

You could just grab multiple buckets of lava. ._______.

this is true but then it comes to the matter of is it worth the amount of iron to make the buckets and how many trips back and forth are you going to take from the lava source to the generator. i just think it would be easier to carry one bucket of water and throw that on the lava source. then pick the water back up and mine away at the field of obsidian.

I think it would be worth it. I mean, you can use the obsidian for a portal.

You sure this would work? You were in creative with an infinate lava bucket.
