El Palacio del Gobierno (The Government Palace) is the executive mansion and office of the President. It was built between 1877-1882 to house the main offices of the republic.
The main façade was inspired by the Barberini palaces of Rome and Potsdam and it's used by the President and ceremonial entrance of State visits.
The place was first occupied by a fortress, demolished in 1802 to build the first House of Government in the current Palm trees' patio. The Government Palace got its color from that primitive building.
Doors are open everyday except on weekends, from 8am to 2pm. Access to galleries, waiting rooms and the patio are unrestricted. The entrance is guarded by ten grenadiers when the President is inside the Palace and access to second floor is closed until his departure.
