The Panzer III was a German medium tank produced in the 1930's and early 1940's as a vehicle intended to fight other armored vehicles and serve as support for the heavier German tanks. By 1943 the Panzer III was no longer being produced due to Allied tanks having more heavily armored vehicles which made it's main turret, a 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun, obsolete.
