in the vid at 2:30 you mention being at the top when the elevator is at the bottom. I suppose you could use a strategically placed block of sand to drop down and activate the elevator.

Very awesome! And if you're up top and it's down there, you could have a dropper drop a block item and it hit a pressure plate at the bottom (then into lava) to activate the return. I don't know about it being up top and you being at the bottom though... xD
