In Minecraft, SkyBlock is a survival map where players are challenged to live and build on a floating island. The object of the map is to survive without cheating, expand your island, grow your own food and thrive. There are many variations of the SkyBlock map, but the original focus on a floating dirt island in an ice biome. Players of the SkyBlock map begin the game with the following materials:

  26 blocks of dirt

  1 oak tree
  
• 
  1 chest
  
• 
  1 lava bucket
  
• 
  1 block of ice
  

SkyBlock can be played solo or enjoyed by multiple players (or as many as can fit on the island at the start). SkyBlock does not have a set game difficulty, though the map should at least be played on Easy to make survival a challenge to the player. Playing SkyBlock is a great way to take a break from other Minecraft worlds and other projects. You can play the map as quick as you can or you can take your time. However, players are encouraged to follow the rules:

  do not make a bridge to the mainland
  
• 
  do not jump off of the island for health
  
• 
  play on at least Easy difficulty
  
• 
  do not use any cheats for any purpose
  

The goal of SkyBlock is not to make a staircase to the mainland and bring supplies back up, though even that journey may seem tempting. Players are encouraged to remain on the floating island and to not jump off of the edge if dying. Throwing your inventory into a chest and jumping off of the island is an easy solution but takes the challenge out of SkyBlock; players should work toward growing their own food to prevent starvation. Furthermore, turning on Minecraft cheats to fly around or spawn something into the world isn’t allowed. Cheats make it far too easy to complete SkyBlock challenges.

What Are SkyBlock Challenges?

On the SkyBlock map download page, there is a list of challenges for players to work toward. Completing these challenges doesn’t award anything except for pride in your accomplishments and whatever the purpose of your task was. Players are not required to complete all of the challenges, but many of them are directly related to survival. Each challenge can be completed with the materials on the island and provided to the player.
