SkyChest

The ultimate test of Vanilla mechanics knowledge and Survival skills, as minimalistic as possible: Only one chest in the middle of the world, filled with one grass block, two trapdoors, six blaze rods and twelve end portal frames.

contents

You might think that it's impossible to play Minecraft like this. You don't even have saplings, water or enough blocks to build a mob farm! But I guarantee you, it is possible. You can go to the Nether, trade with villagers, get a beacon and full diamond gear, fight the dragon and build a base with everything you need!
There are no foul tricks here or hidden command blocks, no data packs and no normal chunks a thousand blocks away, just an empty Overworld with this chest. The Nether and End are normal, but getting to them is hard.

Warning: Saying that this map is extremely hard would be an understatement. You'll likely have to reset many times and weeks might pass before you can even get into the Nether. If you just want a quick challenge for one afternoon, this map is not for you. If you haven't played Minecraft for very long yet or aren't aware of all the things you can find in the Minecraft wiki, this map is not for you. I know very much about this game and it still took me multiple days just to check if this map is even beatable. If you're looking for the hardest Minecraft map that isn't unfair or random, you have probably found it.
This map is multiplayer compatible. There's no real downside to playing with multiple people, except maybe that it gets a little crammed on top of the chest in the beginning. And that more than one person goes insane.
This map does not require any bugs to be used to beat it. It only works in 1.14+.

Setup

  1. Create a superflat world with this preset code:
air;taiga;Turn Creative mode and cheats on. Yes, the semicolon at the end of the preset is necessary.
  2. You will fall out of the world, press F3+N twice to avoid that, then fly back up until the sky is no longer black.
  3. Enter into chat:/setblock ~ ~ ~ command_block
  4. Press the "use" button on the command block (default right click) to open its GUI.
  5. Copy the command below (for example by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+C) and press Ctrl+V in the command block text field to insert it.
  6. Click the "Needs redstone" button to change it to "Always active".
  7. Click "Done". And you're actually done!
  8. You can optionally change the difficulty by entering "/difficulty easy" or "/difficulty hard" into chat. If you want to keep your inventory when dying, you can enter "/gamerule keepInventory true" into chat. If you want to disable natural health regeneration ("UHC mode"), you can enter "/gamerule naturalRegeneration false" into chat. But I wouldn't recommend it.
  9. (The Nether and End stay unchanged.)

The command

summon falling_block ~ ~2 ~ {Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"chain_command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"fill ~ ~-1 ~ ~ ~5 ~ air"},Passengers:[{id:"armor_stand",Health:0,Passengers:[{id:"falling_block",Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"chain_command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"gamemode survival @a"},Passengers:[{id:"armor_stand",Health:0,Passengers:[{id:"falling_block",Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"chain_command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"gamerule spawnRadius 0"},Passengers:[{id:"armor_stand",Health:0,Passengers:[{id:"falling_block",Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"chain_command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"setworldspawn 0 128 0"},Passengers:[{id:"armor_stand",Health:0,Passengers:[{id:"falling_block",Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"chain_command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"tp @a 0 129 0"},Passengers:[{id:"armor_stand",Health:0,Passengers:[{id:"falling_block",Time:1,BlockState:{Name:"command_block",Properties:{"facing":"down"}},TileEntityData:{auto:true,Command:"setblock 0 128 0 chest{Items:[{Slot:0,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:1,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:2,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:3,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:4,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:5,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:6,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:7,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:8,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:10,id:\"dark_oak_trapdoor\",Count:1,tag:{display:{Name:\"{\\\"text\\\":\\\"Chocolate\\\",\\\"italic\\\":false}\"}}},{Slot:13,id:\"grass_block\",Count:1},{Slot:16,id:\"dark_oak_trapdoor\",Count:1,tag:{display:{Name:\"{\\\"text\\\":\\\"Chocolate\\\",\\\"italic\\\":false}\"}}},{Slot:18,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:19,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:20,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:21,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:22,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:23,id:\"blaze_rod\",Count:1},{Slot:24,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:25,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1},{Slot:26,id:\"end_portal_frame\",Count:1}]}"}}]}]}]}]}]}]}]}]}]}]}
This command creates a tower of command blocks above the original one which set the chest with all of its contents, teleport everyone to the top of it, set everyone's gamemode to survival, set the world's spawnpoint there, set the spawn radius to 0 (so that you always spawn on the top block of x=0 z=0 and not spread out, that avoids spawning in the void) and finally destroy themselves, so that there is really only one block left in the world: The chest.
There is also a workaround for MC-145113 included, because normal one-command creations don't work anymore in 1.14+.

Notes for myself (apart from updating the description, command and picture to contain 2 trapdoors instead of the trapped chest):

· Extra challenge: No sugarcane.
· Re-consider everything once 1.16 is fully released.

This is a really cool concept for a map, i understand that you require the wandering trader to get saplings, iron from zombies to get cauldrons and rain to get water, but how are you supposed to even expand your island? can you give us a clue?

Oh wow, I didn't get a notification at all for this.

You can get blocks from many different sources, like bone blocks from skeletons, wool from spiders, iron blocks from zombies, …

Also, this map in its current form is extremely luck based, which I didn't notice before. In my other comment I said how to fix that, by replacing the trapped chest with two wooden trapdoors. But even then it takes on average 27 years to finish, so I'll have to figure out some more things. I'll do that when I have more free time again.

history
Whoops, I got carried away and planned it all now anyway. 4 hours of planning later, I'm now convinced that the map will only take about 1-2 days of play time to properly do many things. Of course you can play for as long as you want and do as much as you want, but after a bit over one day, you should have most basic resources. And there are even many different ways to play this map, all hard in their own way. There are actually no changes needed to the map, apart from the trap chest→2×trap door change.

You can even set yourself the additional challenge to get ultimate gear before you enter the Nether. This is also possible in multiple completely different ways.

This map currently has some problems. The easy one to solve is the trapped chest: It has to be replaced with two wooden trapdoors. The harder one is that this map currently takes an average of 27 years to complete. This does technically not contradict my goal of it being one of the hardest maps ever, but it's also not fun. I'll work on that once I have more time.
