Russian Orthodox cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. Forms the centerpiece of the Smolny Convent, surrounded by other smaller buildings of a similar style, and situated on the bank of the River Neva. The convent's bell tower was never created, but was envisioned to be the tallest bell tower in all of Russia. Its principal architect, Francesco Rastrelli, is better known for his palaces, having designed Grand Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, the Grand Palace in Peterhof, and the redesign of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg which has become an iconic image of Russia.
