The SMS Hamburg is one of the three Hamburg Class Pocket Battleships commissioned by the Imperial German Navy after the last four ships of the Mackensen Class Battlecruisers were redesigned to have larger caliber guns. The six of the old guns of those four ships were then used for the Hamburg Class. Her sister ships are the SMS Bremen and SMS Lübeck.
