At the moment of this writing I started playing Minecraft 9 days ago, so this is my first major project aside from messing around to figure out how stuff works.

This is a 1:1 model of the Defiant-class escort vessel USS Defiant from Star Trek, namely Deep Space Nine. It's 167 blocks long, 120 wide, and 24 tall. The original is 170x134x30 meters. This was created by finding top/bottom/side/etc view images online, turning them into single-view PNG files, and then fed through Spritecraft to create Minecraft schematics files of the top-down, side, and front views of the ship. These were then imported with MCedit and aligned to create a 3-axis cross of the three views. The schematics were all based on lenght (170 blocks initially, 3 got lost...somewhere), so the difference from number of blocks to meters (most notably the height) is due to the schematics simply not agreeing with the official measurements. It looks right, so I'm not bothering - they change the specs to suit themselves in the series anyways so there's no true measurement out there (e.g. the episode "Defiant" where the supposedly 170 meter ship looks like a shuttlecraft when getting within the shield of a "only" 370 meter Galor class warship).

Anyways, started with the cross cut views and then added the skeleton in Minecraft proper and MCedit. Made only half the ship, and then mirrored it when all the mirrored parts (nacelles, decals) were in place.

The exterior is done, now working on the interior.

Features include:
  • 8 fire arrow launchers aka "torpedo tubes" controlled from the bridge, minecart system in place to refill ammo
  • Series-accurate bridge
  • Ready room
  • State room
  • Shuttle bay with series-accurate type 10 shuttlecraft. Working water-based force field protecting the bay, redstone lamp guide lights activated by the same controls as the water field. Sends bursts of light down the underside of the ship towards the ship (new).
  • Captain's quarters with various piston creations like automatic shower, bedroom door, main door, and retractable bookcase to access the redstone circuitry that's otherwise hidden from view)
  • Engineering with warp core, working airlock to the outside for hull walks
  • Sickbay
  • Crew quarters
  • Transporter room. Clicking a button briefly activates some pistons that release a short burst of water and opens up the underside of the ship. The water burst brings the player safely down to the surface without having a permanent column of water.
  • Deflector, buzzard collectors, nacelles glow using glowstones, water, lava, glass.
  • Custom texture pack for the painting item, allowing LCARS panels all over the ship, including a massive one in engineering spanning something like 3x6 blocks

The point of this project is to have an exterior as close to accurate as possible. The interior doesn't matter as much as the Defiant is smaller on the inside than what I have room for, there aren't much reference material, etc. Since I don't have things like antimatter storage to worry about I have more room than the original, which I mostly use to automate all sorts of stupid things.

IMPORTANT:
Spawns you outside the ship, on the ground, with the shuttle bay redstone lamp guide lights activated. I suggest studying the outside first, then heading inside through the shuttle bay or the engineering airlock. To see the torpedos in action, activate them on the bridge, then either exit through engineering, the transporter or the shuttle bay, OR just make a hle in the bridge ceiling.

Anvil format world save (For minecraft 1.2+)

Art file to make the paintings/etc work. Put in minecraft.jar/art/

Without this file, the internals will look extremely peculiar with paintings everywhere

Update #5 : by Cptnodegard 03/05/2012 11:50:46 pmMar 5th, 2012

The old levers to control lighting and "force field" have been replaced with push-buttons controlling an RC NOR latch, so it can be turned on/off from either control pad independent on what position the other is in. The piston/glowstone system for retractable lighting has been replaced with a redstone lamp system that sends short bursts of light down the line on the underside of the ship, pointing to the shuttle bay, sort of to guide shuttles in. Very minor changes to other parts of the ship.
