Since i have been using this for a bunch of different things on a survival server, i can confirm that this works as a double piston extender, however if any block that aren't sand or gravel are put on top, they will not be retracted. for a 2 high sand wall, this is ideal and a darn simple solution.

anvils cant be pushed by pistons and dragon eggs break...

Last time i checked anvils can be pushed... but i forgot dragon eggs break...
