Hello,
this is a Union Pacific Class 4000 steam locomotive nicknamed "Big Boy". They were produced by the Amercian Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1941 and 1944 and put into service by the Union Pacific Railroad to pull freight trains over the Rocky Mountains.
In total, 25 Big Boy locomotives were made and named from 4000 to 4024.
Big Boy locomotives are equipped with a 4-wheel leading truck, two sets of 8 driving wheels and a 4-wheel trailing truck. Therefore, the wheel arrangement in White notation is 4-8-8-4 or (2’D)D2’ using the VDEV/VMEV/UIC system. No other steam locomotive has ever been built with such a wheel arrangement.
Big Boys' fireboxes had grates so large that it was necessary to convey coal by an auger from the tender to the firebox. A small steam engine powered this mechanical stoker.
Weighing 548.3 tons and generating a continous output of 6290 horsepower measured at the coupling hook, Big Boy locomotives were the heaviest and most powerful steam locomotives ever to be built.
Until now, only 4014 remained in operable condition.
