The USS United States is hands down the most famous US aircraft carrier that never was. Harry S. Truman approved it on July 29th, 1948. It was to be the first of five new supercarriers. The idea being that it would be able to launch large planes that could carry atomic bombs. The keel was laid down in Newport News Dry Dock on April 18th, 1949 but the ship was canceled days later on the 23rd. Most point the cancellation of the carrier due to military budgets cuts and the Air Force's desire to make an atomic powered bomber. Nuclear weapons were later carried aboard the Midway carriers and other carriers that came after. The USS United States was a gorgeous carrier that was unfortunately forgotten. Hopefully, this build sheds a little light on a forgotten legend.
