This is my 5x5 horizontal, condensed display prototype created for the Redstone Development Foundation (I was formerly part of the UTD, but have since left due to irreconcilable differences)

It's a dumb display. There are labeled switches that manually control which torch is lit. Though it can easily be hooked up to anything to display characters, numbers, a game, etc...

It is scalable up to a usable maximum of 100xchunkmax. The new design can easily be modified to whatever size is desired. As can be seen with the "Minecraft" screenshot.

The cross section screenshot shows the minimum size of a 5x5 display is (5x6x13). Each additional row only adds 2 to the overall height, and each column only adds an additional 1 to the width.

Feel free to use it however you wish!

As I am no longer a part of the UTD, I have changed the name.

Indeed it is. You can just copy and paste them next to each other like I did to make the "Minecraft" screenshot you see above. Making them taller takes a little more effort, but it's certainly doable. That's what I did for the giant 21x21 TV.

Basically yes. Though the switch wall can be removed, and a more complex input system of your choice can control which pixels are on / off. It's what I did for the Television.

I'm guessing you'd hook this up to a counter and make scrolling marque text? :p

That's one use. For my TV, I created a memory module system for storing imagery that is sequentially fed into the inputs.

does the memory loop until it's needed?

Nope. The modules are lined up in a row. When the first module set (first image stored) is activated, it waits 30 ticks, then sends an activation signal to the next module which does the same. This continues until there are no memory modules left.

I merely chose "M" for the screenshot. It can do anything you want. A drawing, numbers, "F", "U", or whatever.
