Officially, the right to have a city government body was obtained by Vyborg in 1403, but the town hall building did not appear immediately. Even when the Swedish king Gustav Vasa visited the city in 1555, the question of the need to build a town hall was raised. The first town hall was wooden and burned down in 1628. The town hall building, built in 1643, has been preserved to this day. in 1898, it was reconstructed according to the project of architect B. Blomkvist in the Neo-Renaissance style: the third and attic floors were added. In 1908, a monument to Thorgils Knutsson was erected on the square in front of the building.
