You can make factions and build your own base with obsidian, or you join a faction.
I made a plugin which enables you to fight against others in an arena. You can get teleported to the arena from anywhere in the world.
Another plugin allows you to compete for Ranks. Killing others while surviving yourself can get you up in the top 5 (type "/top" into ingame chat).
