Her best friend had happened to move away, which made Lavender very upset because she started to develop feelings for him. It was later said on the news a few weeks later that he was shot and killed at his home by his abusive father. This tore Lavender up. Later on, she tries to tell her Grandmother that she keeps seeing people, but she keeps sliding it away. Later on, something happened to her esophagus and she is forced to get a surgery done, which makes her completely loose her voice. She studied sign language after the incident and began communicating with people that way.
