Backstory: Red Szabo is an immortal being with no biological family. Existing in full strength since the beginning of time (or the Origines, as they are sometimes called), she is a loner and a fierce warrior, extremely well-versed in the lore of the weapons of Lighte, possessing her own magnificent sword, Sunsteele.  She was raised in the Lore of Lighte by its Keepere, Coillia Burneheart, and under her learned a great deal about healing, combat, and many other aspects of Lighte. During the many years that she appeared as a very young woman, she was fierce, stubborn, and headstrong, speaking boldly; her temper was hotter than her flaming red hair. Over time, however, she did gain more discretion and began to explore the elements of healing taught to her in earlier years by her mentor and dear friend Coillia. This led to a lifelong interest in both herb-lore and Lightespelles of healing, which she would later perfect.

While outwardly appearing proud and strong with not a single weakness, Red was incredibly lonely, having no biological family of her own. She was also reluctant to engage in any sort of romantic relationship, due to the interchangeable gender possessed by Radiante Ones, making all have a bisexual tendency. Red's deeply-concealed skeptical nature also further fueled this hesitation. At last she began a tentative relationship with Lizza, a fellow Radiante One who most often appeared as female. They never officially married and had no children, but remained together in a small abode similar to a treehouse on the outskirts of the Lighte village Slateport City.

In the third Darke Uprising, she assumed the role of Guardian of the Children of Lighte, fiercely protective especially of Beverly and Aaron Lightirone (the central protagonists of that time period), their children Karateus and Holly, and the enigmatic fox Ryoran. Red singlehandedly obliterated the soul of the Darke Presence's most powerful minion, Yvel'cha, whose sole mission had been to darken and drain the sacred Fountains of Ab'amor (from which the Children of Lighte chiefly draw their powers). Also during this time period, she came to an exceedingly difficult situation when female human Beverly (Crusher) Lightirone developed intense romantic feelings for her. While Red never admitted it until nearly ten Earth years afterward, the feelings were mutual; and Red soon realised she no longer loved Lizza, gently ending their relationship soon after. Red was briefly confined to the realm of Darke after Lighte's powers were temporarily caged, and during this time she found the existence of the Summoning Rune, which the Darke Presence had perverted to summon the Children of Lighte into his own corrupted powers. She would later report the existence of the rune to Coillia, she herself being inadequately gifted to bring its power into full manifest.

In the fourth Darke Uprising, Red appeared in her male form as Akolai, a forty-five-year-old Romulan man with a tame fox named Arakune. She came to Earth to investigate and attempt to stop the recent redoubling of Darke forces particularly in the area of Marin County, California (also known as Starfleet Headquarters). While conducting this lengthy and tedious investigation, she once more encountered Beverly Crusher, recently divorced from her husband, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D. In the form of Akolai, Red this time did successfully pursue a relationship with Beverly. Unfortunately, soon after they admitted their love for each other, they were abruptly forced to flee from the growing Darkeness which had dealt both severe injuries in their human forms. Beverly (also a High Healer in her Spirite-form) revived the soul of Red/Akolai's deceased fox, Arakune, on the journey. Several weeks later she became unexpectedly pregnant with her and Red's child, a son they would later name Korsidë. Both their relationship and Korsidë's conception infuriated Coillia Burneheart, for the Radiante Ones were intended to be kept as a pure-blooded race, never mixing with the blood of mortals. (At the time Beverly was completely unaware that her partner was Red and not actually Akolai.)

Consequently this set a curse over Red, Beverly, and Korsidë. Red confessed her true identity to Beverly soon after the latter had told her that she was pregnant, the former explaining in more depth the complexity of her interchangeable gender. Regardless of this Beverly chose to accept and continue their relationship. She gave birth to Korsidë in only her sixth month of pregnancy; the baby was extremely small and fragile, though a fierce fighter of intermingled blood. Shortly afterward, Red (now appearing permanently in her female form) and Beverly at last joined their hands in marriage in the characteristically wild, fey, and sacred ceremony of the Radiante Ones, their wedding night taking place in an ivory skiff upon the Rivere of Lighte.

Coillia and Red's respect for one another was broken at this point, and the former was given no other option than to place a curse over their family for Red's disobedience of the laws of Lighte. Red began to seethe with hatred for Coillia; both the curse and the hatred manifested simultaneously upon arrival at Brittleshore. Beverly was stricken with a lethal fever that even Red's unmatched healing abilities could not diminish, and she died soon afterward in horrible suffering. Determined to seek revenge upon Coillia for the murder of her wife, Red confronted the former and was banished from the realm of Lighte, having temporarily fallen to the powers of Darke. For a year she roamed the wilderness until her anger was at last cooled, though her powers were severely weakened by her brief communion with Darkeness. She was forgiven and healed by her wife Beverly, whom Coillia had resurrected. The two were initially forbidden to continue their romance, for the mixing of Radiante and mortal blood was unfathomably perilous to all the realms of time and space, creating unpredictable offspring of incredible and unbridled powers of neither Darke nor Lighte. However, Beverly chose to sacrifice her mortality and thus her life in the tangible realm, agreeing to never being allowed to return to Earth for longer than a single day. Thus she became fully Radiante in blood, and she and Red were permitted to resume their relationship. Red never again fell to or was tempted by the forces of Darke.
