An ashigaru was the rank of soldiers and footmen in japanese armies. They were the bulk of the infantry, and could wield swords, bows, and spears. They would be trained by Samurai in the craft of war, but they were almost never guaranteed a promotion past this rank. They wore wooden lacquered armor, sometimes with minimal plating.
