Personally, I use a pixel editing software with use a template for 1.6.2 and 1.8.8 skins. This editor is known as Gimp. I am sad to say, my version of Gimp is no longer available. However, they do have more updated versions that work just fine with Windows 7 through 10. I personally cannot get it to work on my boyfriend's computer, but I do not believe that that happens with everyone's PC / laptop. You can use 3-D templates that are free as well. (Gimp is free, but it is hard for some people to learn.)
