Scholastically speaking, they are a member of an ancient people living north of the Caucasus (region lying between the Black Sea - west and the Caspian Sea o east, occupied by Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.) and the Sea of Azov. They were driven by the Scythians out of southern Russia, over the Caucasus, and into Anatolia (Asian portion of Turkey) toward the end of the 8th century BC. Ancient writers sometimes confused them with the Scythians.
