Data Tutashkhia is the Megrelian equivalent of Robin Hood, which operated in Georgia in pre—revolutionary times. The image created by the Georgian writer Chabua Amirajibi in his epic novel called Date Tutashkhia was based on a really existing abraga - Gudza Shelia. The main character of the novel sets out to eradicate evil and improve the world, which leads him on the path of conflict with the law and the state, as a result of which he becomes abrag (abrek), a man who went to the mountains, living outside the government and the law, leading a guerrilla-robber lifestyle.



The novel consists of four parts, each of which is preceded in the form of an epigraph by a chapter of the Georgian pagan myth about the spiritual search for the god Tutashkhi. The narrative is a story-related short story by Count Szegedi, who served as the head of the Caucasian gendarmerie at the end of the XIX — beginning of the XX century. They contain the stories of various people who met the Data Tutashkhia on his way. Among them is Count Szegedi himself, who watched the intertwining fates of cousins, Data Tutashkhia and Mushni Zarandia, selflessly loving each other, endowed with equal talent, but for moral reasons living in two opposing worlds.



Among the narrators are representatives of the clergy, the common people and the Georgian intelligentsia, who are concerned about the fate of the Georgian nation. The novel features the voices of various representatives of Georgian society, and through the fate of different people, a picture of the life of that time emerges.

Orphaned early, Data Tutashkhia grew up in the family of a simple but very educated sexton Magali Zarandia, where, in addition to his two children, three adopted ones were raised. It was here, in the house of "love and virtue", that the foundations of morality were laid for two twin brothers, Dat Tutashkhia and Mushni Zarandia, whose relationship forms the main storyline of the narrative. A ridiculous accident forced Data to embark on the path of exile and in constant flight from the guardians of the law, his extraordinary abilities were put to use. His cousin chose the path of service to the Russian Empire, where he hoped to benefit his people.



Data Tutashkhia's whole life is an incessant struggle with the evil around him, from its minor manifestations to cruel atrocities. In his youth, he protected the weak and helped the disadvantaged, hoping that they, in turn, would help others. Having a clear mind, Date quickly discovered a lot of undesirable, and sometimes cruel consequences of his essentially noble actions.

And then Data Tutashkhia decided that the human race was not worthy of his help and stopped interfering in other people's affairs. But as time passed, the spiritual quest of Data led him to new conclusions and he again joined the fight against evil, destroying it with violence, which again did not lead to the desired result.

At the same time, Count Szegedi's subordinate Mushni Zarandia worked in the gendarmerie, where, thanks to a clear mind and moral purity instilled from childhood, he successfully solved complex detective tasks, arousing the Count's sincere admiration. He was quite able to achieve his goals by playing on the base motives of people who stumbled, without affecting the interests of respectable citizens. The elusive brother-abrag was the only vulnerable point of Mushni and, as far as he could, he solved this problem by legal methods, first issuing a pardon warrant, and after the second departure of Dat Tutashkhia to abragi, persuading him to surrender to the authorities and go to prison.

The personality of Data Tutashkhia fascinates with its beauty and moral strength. For this person, there is only one law — his own understanding of good and evil. If it seems right to him, he takes part in revolutionary speeches, he is true to his word and commitments, but in finding ways to improve the world, he has his own path, on which he can have only temporary companions. Moral searches eventually lead Data to the path of self-sacrifice and his image, painted in recent novels, acquires a truly divine beauty.

Data Tutashkhia dies at the hands of his own teenage son, falling into a trap set by his brother, a gendarme who moved to St. Petersburg. Count Szegedi, who had retired by that time, believes that Mushni's appointment in St. Petersburg led to a transformation of his former moral principles. Having guessed by indirect signs about Mushni's intention to destroy his brother, Count Szegedi makes an attempt to save Data Tutashkhia, clearly showing which side he is on in a lifelong dispute between two brothers. For Gendarmerie Colonel Mushni Zarandia, the resolution of this dispute also proves disastrous: three years later, he dies of a severe form of melancholy.

Дата Туташхиа — мегрельский аналог Робин Гуда, действовавшего в Грузии в дореволюционное время. Образ, созданный грузинским писателем Чабуа Амирэджиби в его эпическом романе под названием Дата Туташхиа, был основан на действительно существовавшем абраге по имени Гудза Шелиа.
Главный герой романа задаётся целью искоренить зло и улучшить мир, что приводит его на путь конфликта с законом и государством, в следствие чего он становится абрагом, человеком, ушедший в горы, живущим вне власти и закона, ведущий партизанско-разбойничий образ жизни. Роман состоит из четырёх частей, каждой из которых в виде эпиграфа предшествует глава грузинского языческого мифа о духовном поиске бога Туташхи. Повествование представляет собой связанные общим сюжетом записки-новеллы графа Сегеди, служившего в конце XIX — начале XX века начальником кавказской жандармерии. Они содержат рассказы различных людей, встречавших на своём пути Дату Туташхиа. Среди них сам граф Сегеди, наблюдавший за переплетением судеб двоюродных братьев, Даты Туташхиа и Мушни Зарандиа, самозабвенно любящих друг друга, наделённых равновеликим талантом, но в силу нравственных причин живущих в двух противоборствующих мирах. Среди рассказчиков представители духовенства, простого народа и грузинской интеллигенции, озабоченной судьбами грузинской нации. В романе звучат голоса самых разных представителей грузинского общества, через судьбы разных людей вырисовывается картина жизни того времени.

Рано осиротев, Дата Туташхиа вырос в семье простого, но очень образованного дьячка Магали Зарандиа, где кроме двоих своих детей воспитывались и трое приёмных. Именно здесь, в доме «любви и добродетели», были заложены основы нравственности двух похожих как близнецы братьев, Даты Туташхиа и Мушни Зарандиа, взаимоотношения которых составляют основную сюжетную линию повествования. Нелепая случайность вынудила Дату вступить на путь изгнания и в постоянном бегстве от блюстителей закона нашлось применение его незаурядным способностям. Его двоюродный брат избрал путь служения Российской империи, где он рассчитывал принести пользу своему народу.

Вся жизнь Даты Туташхиа — непрекращающаяся борьба с окружающим его злом, от мелких его проявлений до жестоких злодеяний. В юности он защищал слабых и помогал обездоленным, надеясь, что и они, в свою очередь, помогут другим. Обладая ясным умом, Дата быстро обнаружил массу нежелательных, а, подчас и жестоких последствий своих благородных по сути действий.

И тогда Дата Туташхиа решил, что род людской не достоин его помощи и перестал вмешиваться в чужие дела. Но шло время, духовные искания Даты привели его к новым выводам и он вновь вступил в борьбу со злом, уничтожая его насилием, что опять не привело к желаемому результату.

В это же время подчинённый графа Сегеди Мушни Зарандиа работал в жандармерии, где, благодаря ясному уму и привитой с детства нравственной чистоте, успешно решал сложные сыскные задачи, вызывая искреннее восхищение графа. Ему вполне удавалось добиваться своих целей, играя на низменных побуждениях оступившихся людей, не затрагивая интересов добропорядочных граждан. Неуловимый брат-абраг был единственным уязвимым местом Мушни и по мере сил он решал эту проблему законными методами, сначала выдав ордер на помилование, а после вторичного ухода Даты Туташхиа в абраги, уговорив его сдаться властям и сесть в тюрьму.

Личность Даты Туташхиа завораживает своей красотой и нравственной силой. Для этого человека существует только один закон — своё собственное понимание добра и зла. Если это кажется ему правильным, он принимает участие в революционных выступлениях, он верен данному слову и взятым на себя обязательствам, но в поиске способов улучшения мира у него свой собственный путь, на котором он может иметь лишь временных попутчиков. Нравственные искания в конце концов приводят Дату на путь самопожертвования и его образ, нарисованный в последних новеллах, обретает поистине божественную красоту.

Дата Туташхиа гибнет от руки собственного сына-подростка, попав в ловушку, расставленную братом-жандармом, перебравшимся в Петербург. Ушедший к тому времени в отставку граф Сегеди считает, что петербургское назначение Мушни привело к трансформации его прежних моральных принципов. Догадавшись по косвеннымდ признакам о намерении Мушни уничтожить брата, граф Сегеди делает попытку спасти Дату Туташхиа, ясно показывая, на чьей он стороне в споре двоих братьев длиною в целую жизнь. Для полковника жандармерии Мушни Зарандиа разрешение этого спора также оказывается гибельным: спустя три года он умирает от тяжёлой формы меланхолии.=In loving memory of
