(When using the pencil tool, make sure to expand, and then shrink the image to 128x128 and back to 64x64 to blur the pixels together, and then correct any transparencies that you don't want.)
And then you could raise the contrast, that way the shades become more intense, but retain their general shape. But are not solid blocks of color thanks to the resizing fade :)
