My entry for the contest is the Komainu. A Guardian spirit that takes the form a lion dog and it is placed at the entrances to shrines and palaces to protect it from malevolent spirits. You probably know what they are and have seen them many times but never knew the name. They are used all across Asia, from Taiwan to Japan. And many rulers hold them in the highest prestige.Art depicting Komainus
