During WW1, the Germans wanted a new type of soldier that could effectively raid trenches, so they created special "Storm Units" made of highly trained shock-troops armed with shortened rifles, submachine guns, and grenades. Even to today, their influence in pop-culture is irrefutable, with several franchises such as Star Wars basing characters off of the German Stormtroopers.
