The subculture we know as Goth or Gothic originated from a music genre with that same name. Personally I am of the opinion that nowadays, the Gothic subculture is held together by a common love for seeing the beauty in extraordinary things which the average person might find ugly or scary, such as darkness, death and decay, and express through art, clothes etc.. Whereas other people are of the opinion that liking the music is still the primary key to whether a person can call themselves Goth or not. ;P
