Moment I: Storage

“I… I think I’m go- -gonn- -gonnACHOO-!” Dust went flying everywhere, and the bronze-skinned man sniffled. His companion smiled woefully at the former, and recommended that he get out of the musky, dust-filled, and horribly ventilated basement. “I- I think that’s a good idea,” he sniffled again, and with an apology to his friend, climbed the stairs to return to the main level.

Yugi shook his head, feeling bad for his close friend. Atem had a couple of allergies - spring pollen, certain kinds of nuts, but one of his worst was dust and mould. Even a little bit of one of those could cause his eyes to water on the spot. Thankfully, none of his allergies were life-threatening; Yugi had to count his blessings for his friend.

The teenager turned back to the large collection of cardboard boxes. Atem, his little sister, and his parents had moved to Domino less than a month ago, and when Atem had offhandedly mentioned needing to unpack the majority of the stuff he and his family had failed to unpack at the moment. Yugi (being the gold-hearted friend that he was) immediately agreed to help Atem unpack. Their friends would’ve joined, but unfortunately, all were preoccupied.

During the five minutes that Atem was able to survive down in the basement, he had managed to find his pile of stuff, saying that “we shouldn’t touch the others’ stuff without their permission.” Yugi understood, nodded to Atem’s words, and the two got to work.

Unluckily for Atem, enough dust had gathered in two-and-a-half weeks to cause his allergies to act up.

Yugi shook himself out of his thoughts and turned back to the various pillars of boxes. Reaching for one on top, he picked it up and carried the box over to the table they had set up. He pulled out the knife from his pocket and started to cut the tape holding the box closed. The flaps lifted up a little as the knife cut down the middle, and Yugi pulled away all four covering flaps to find out what was inside the box.

A variety of shirts were folded neatly inside. The one on top of the pile was a bright crimson-colored polo. Yugi flicked through the shirts briefly before closing the flaps and carrying the box over to the stairs, setting the box down next to the wooden steps. He moved back to the boxes and started taking apart the pillar, one box at a time.

The boxes were filled with a variety of things, and half the boxes Yugi suspected weren’t Atem’s; probably his sister’s. His sister would probably do that, since Yugi saw very little of her own boxes when he and Atem were sorting it out. Yugi picked up a box, and was surprised by the weight of it. He staggered briefly, before carrying it over to the table. Opening it up, he peered inside to see a tangled ball of wires. He carefully picked up the wires, and saw a GBA under the cluffer, along with a Wireless Adapter. Inside the Adapter, Yugi could see through the transparent plastic, a cartridge for Pokemon LeafGreen.

The teenager blinked, then pulled the GBA and its Adapter from the bottom of the clutter. He set them on the table with the mind of offering them to Atem, then began untangling the charger cord twirled into the ball of wires. It took some effort, but the teenager eventually got it unwired.

He glanced at the rest of the unopened boxes, then the pile of opened ones by the stairs. ‘I’ve opened a lot of boxes… I might as well bring them up to Atem and see what he wants to keep and what he doesn’t.’ He picked up the three electronics, then placed them into one of the boxes, stacked that box onto a bigger box, and carried both boxes up the steps.

He bumped the door open, glancing around the house. “Atem?” He called out, then wandered the house. He set the boxes down by the couch in the spacious living room, and called out for his friend again. Tilting his head, Yugi thought about where his friend could be. He pulled the GBA and its pieces out of the box he had left them in, and peeked around the large house. The kitchen was mostly clean, and the dining room seemed normal.

Yugi stared at the stairs leading up, then shrugged, walking up them. “Atem? Are you here?” He called out. There were four doors, two on each side. The two on the left led to the master bedroom and a bathroom. On the other side were two bedrooms. On the second door, Yugi saw Atem, dead asleep on the bed.

'His allergies must’ve really knocked him out…’ Yugi felt his sympathies go out for his friend. Walking carefully into the rug-padded room, he smiled at seeing Atem dead asleep. ‘I better not wake him up…’

He eyed the electronics in his arms, and then glanced at the nearby plug. Half of him didn’t want to touch Atem’s stuff without his permission, but the other half of him (the half that he was named after) wanted to see how far Atem had gotten in LeafGreen. Yugi stood there for a moment, contemplating his choices.

“If you find any games, feel free to complete them. I didn’t even get halfway with most of them when I was younger.”

Atem’s words as they entered the basement for the first time to begin their cleaning job floated through Yugi’s mind. Even though they hadn’t known each other for long, Yugi knew Atem was an avid gamer - Atem was one of the few people able to stand up to Yugi in a game! To allow Yugi to play his games, Yugi considered that a privilege.

With a shake of his head, he plugged the GBA in, and booted up the console. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones was inserted inside, but Yugi decided to switch out the games, preferring to see how far Atem had gotten in a game the other had played himself.

Booting up the handheld, the title screen for Pokemon LeafGreen blinked onto the screen. Yugi booted up Atem’s save file, and his male avatar appeared on the screen. Three badges, an Ivysaur, a Farfetch’d, and a Sandslash.

Yugi lost track of time continuing Atem’s game. When Atem woke up about an hour later, he happily watched his friend play his half-finished game, making comments on which Pokemon they would need, and cheering for Yugi during his battles.

Two hours later, the end credits rolled.
