When the roots of the world tree entwine with the roots of any other, the amount of energy transferred is too much for an ordinary tree to bear. It expels this energy into a fae body. A dryad. These are few and far between, and the World Tree cares for each and every one of them, as if they were her own. There were seven dryads. A Tree of Mind, Tree of Body, Tree of Power, Tree of Fate, Tree of Soul, Tree of Heart, and a Tree of Life.
Dryad Maple, the Tree of Life, was given a task to harvest life stars from the dead and return them to the World Tree. Life stars can be considered a "battery." They run out at the end of a life, though they can be destroyed. The Dryad takes them away so the World Tree can repurpose them. For this reason, however, the Maple is seen as a "Grim Reaper" figure, rather than a mother of earth figure like other dryads are, despite carrying out her other duties as a fae of the forest. 
The Tree of Life was one day accused of stealing life stars from the world tree. Each dryad came together to seal her away, before forcing her to cast a final seal on herself.
The Seal of Body. Her form was reduced. In an attempt to defend herself, the Maple summoned two branches, and the seal cast them as a permanent part of her body.
The Seal of Power. She no longer had the powers of a fae of the forest, and no powers as a dryad.
The Seal of Mind. Meant to seal away her knowledge and make her forget. This seal failed due to the power of the target, instead splitting her in half.
The Seal of Soul. Meant to change her personality so she would be a new entity, since the Maple couldn't be killed. This seal failed, splitting her in half.
The Seal of Fate. Her fate was no longer set, meaning anything trying to read it would fail, however, anything and everything can happen, even outside forces of logic.
The Seal of Heart. Negative feelings would be locked away. This seal failed due to the power of the target, splitting her in half.
The Seal of Life. Immortality. A curse.
And finally, the Maple was forever locked beneath the roots of the world tree.
Until the world tree burned.
Imagine her surprise when she awoke to the demon wolves lunging at her
"Wh-who are you? You're not Momiji..."
The Maple contemplated.
"Shirasawa Kaede" She ultimately said.
