The story

Part 1

Whispers echoed throughout the wide dark room where the experiment was taking place. Every now and then a door opened and closed, making a loud shaky clang sound throughout the building. The scientists gathered around a table were partaking in a hushed conversation, and paid no attention to the impatient crowd of students seated nearby. At last an old man turned around and faced them, and coughed three times. Everyone fell silent.

o Ladies and Gentlemen of the Academy of Space and Science,o he addressed them in a wheezy voice, o This experiment marks the beginning of a great change in the way we live, in the way we think, and the way we commune with other parts of the universe. This experiment marks the end of the Era of Darkness o the start of an Era of Light!o He paused for a moment, and went on.

o Our race first appeared upon this planet, Aldun, a thousand years ago. Though we were only a primitive form of what we are today, we were ever an intelligent species, and we advanced quickly into the technological age. Despite our brilliant progress, however, eventually we reached a standstill. It had seemed we looked upon that which there was no conquering. For fast as our minds had grown, our bodies remained the same, ever bound by gravity and matter.

o Two months ago, a young student from this very school developed a theory that light, like water, can be hardened. Light, he said, that elusive and mystical energy, can be contained and solidified. At first we ridiculed him, but such high species as ourselves are not bound by prejudice or ignorance for long. So we sought to either verify or disprove his claim. For if indeed it proved to be true, certainly we could develop a way to travel at the speed of light.o

The students, bored before, were now listening intently. They had heard of the mad student and his implausible claimso ¦ but the man before them, an esteemed and experienced scientist, seemed to think there was something to them. One of them raised a hand, but the old scientist made a motion for him to wait.

o Through a study we did on the three moons orbiting Aldun, we discovered one of them only reflects 4% of the light that shines upon it. The rest is absorbed. Led by the desire to find out the cause of this peculiar incident, I went to this moon on the field trip. Some of you may have noticed that I was very preoccupied during the visit. The reason for this was that I had discovered o after years of mankind believing it impossible o an element which not only contains, but solidifies light. Once mined and carefully purified, it is almost weightless. Unaffected by gravity and inertia, it can gain enough momentum to travel at the speed of light.

o Ladies and Gentlemen, we who are here tonight are about to witness the launching of the first spaceship to be built out of this rare element. Indeed, this is the spaceship destined to realize our wildest dreams, and to take us beyond the stars!o

He walked back to the table and pressed a button. With a tremendous shaking, the East wall of the room pulled up into the ceiling. Outside the building there stood a tall, dark spaceship. Its smooth walls gave back no gleam of reflected light to the three moons in the night sky above. It silent stillness gave no sign of the voyagers inside, brave men and women risking death for the sake of science. The hand of the clock reached twelve. Without a sound, the spaceship leaped into the sky, and was gone.

Part 2

The captain watched as his planet quickly grew smaller. The voyagers with him sat around in groups, some looking out the windows, and other quietly talking. They all were aware of the danger they might be in at any moment, and he knew that they watched their distant home with all the sadness of a last farewell. Ten minutes passed and it had disappeared completely, swallowed up completely in the blackness of space.

By the end of the first hour, they were out of their solar system and still gaining speed. Due to the shipo s design, the voyagers felt no ill effects from the unnatural rapidity at which they travelled. The captain checked the digital map and speedometer. In three hours, if the ship continued to accelerate, they would reach a small solar system in the Orion Spur. He sat down and waited.

It was exactly two hours, forty minutes and four seconds later that he sensed something was wrong. The ship seemedo ¦bigger, almost, and he felt a strange warm, tickling sensation on his skin. The ship seemed to shake, ever so slightly. He checked the status screen. o Condition: Stableo it read in green letters. He looked about again, scanning the room carefully. No one else seemed to notice. They were mostly sitting alone in various corners, absorbed in their own thoughts. A few of them were asleep. A young woman, in her early twenties, was typing something on her electric notebook.

The air had grown warmer. Degree by degree, slowly it had crept up while he was preoccupied. He got out of his chair and headed to the other side of the room, where his satchel was. He needed a drink of water. Perhaps he was just gettingo ¦ space sick. By then, the others had noticed that something was wrong as well. o Ito s getting so hot,o said one. Another complained of having blurry eyesight. Had they all come down with some strange kind of illness?

Suddenly, the ground was uneven beneath his feet. He staggered, and put his hand out to catch himself. It hit the side of the spaceship and o the wall crumbled. His hand didno t go all the way through, but a fine powder, finer than dust, poured from the spot. As it fell, it seemed to sparkle before it suddenly disappeared. A large dent was left in the side of the ship. The voyagers saw this happen, and though not knowing what it signified, they were afraid. What could have happened to the ship to make it crumble away in dust?

Suddenly they began to panic. Whatever the cause, the spaceship was crumbling and they had to escape. They rushed to the emergency chamber and fought over the space suits. Wherever anyone stepped, the floor began to disintegrate as well. The spaceship was growing even larger, and the rooms seemed to be changing their shapes. Only one thing could have caused this. The hard light, slowed down and trapped in the mineral, was heating up and changing back into its original form, that of matterless energy. Soon the ship would be nothing but another ray of light shining in space.

Finally, everyone had their safety suits. Everyone, that is, except the young woman, who was still struggling with hers. As the captain ran forward to help her, he and the other voyagers began to sink into the floors. He grabbed a rail, but that, too, crumbled away and disappeared. Suddenly, he fell through the floor and the spaceship rushed onwards, leaving him and the voyagers behind. Less than a second later, it exploded in a noiseless yet blinding flash of light, which spread out in every direction.

When he recovered his sight, the captain glanced about at the other voyagers. The woman was nowhere among them. He turned on his jetpack and flew towards the distant place where the spaceship had exploded. It was so far awayo ¦ how could he ever reach it? He couldno t stand the thought that she might be in a thousand little pieces all over the galaxy. She must be somewhere, still alive, but hopelessly lost in space, alone. He had to find her.

He wasno t aware at first that a hand was on his arm, but when he noticed, he only shook it off and kept flying. The hand grabbed him again, this time harder, and a stern voice spoke through his radio.

o Ito s no use. Sheo s gone.o

The captain looked through the visor, into the eyes of the man beside him, searching for some sign of hope. But there was none, and in the older mano s eyes there was the knowledge of death.

o We only have so much fuel. We cannot waste it upon useless endeavours,o the older man continued, o There is a planet called Earth nearby. We have enough power to reach it if we leave now.o

The captain looked one last time in the direction of the space ship, but he turned back to the others. He was alive, and lucky to be so, but he felt dead. The other voyagers looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to take the lead, but he stayed in the back, and the older man led the way.

The captain flew in the back in miserable silence. Suddenly he felt a hand upon his arm. It was very warm, and was not wearing the cumbersome space gloves of the others. He looked at it in surprise, and saw that it was glowing. Turning his head, he saw the missing girl beside him. She was made out of light. o Sister?o he said aloud, o Is that really you? Or am I dreaming?o She nodded her head once, and gave him a sweet, sad smile, as though to say a final goodbye. And then in a streak of light she was gone.

Part 3

It was six in the morning. The television had been on all night, and when the boy came into the living room in his pajamas, the national news was on.

o Today we received a shocking report from Alabama,o the female news reporter said, o claiming aliens had landed in a small field just west of Henry County. Squads were quickly sent in to verify this claim. It seems that this was no hoax, as we have a reporter right now interviewing the aliens at the nearby prison, where they have graciously been offered a place to stayo ¦o

Later that night, the captain lay in bed, too sad and confused to sleep. He had never believed in angels, and she had seemed too alive to him to be one. By some freak incident of nature she had been turned into light, a living, moving, sentient being unlike anything else in the universe. He wondered if she was lonely up there. He looked out the window, at the strange unfamiliar sky, with its bizarre constellations, and its single moon. A bright shining thing streaked across the sky. Earthlings might call it a shooting star, but he would always think otherwise. Suddenly he knew that she could see him, and though she could never escape the form which she was now in, she would always remain a helpful guide to those lost among the stars.

So.....I hope you enjoyed and please remember to diamond and favourite if you wish to improve my chances of being in the finals or whatnot.
