  The Egyptian Goddess Nut (pronounced ‘Newt’), also known as “She who Bore the Gods”, is the goddess of the sky and heavens, but is also associated with coffins and sarcophagi because she protects the dead until they are reborn in the Afterlife. She is portrayed as a woman with skin like a starry sky, full of constellations, arched over the earth (or her brother Geb, the God of the Earth). Commonly, she is depicted as a naked woman with a water pot on her head, and the pot is also the hieroglyph for her name. As the daughter of Shu and Tefnut, she is one of the first Egyptian deities of Heliopolis.

  
  As the Goddess of the Sky, she was said to swallow the sun in the evening, and give birth to it again in the morning (which gave rise to the days and nights) There is also an alternative myth about how night and day came to be. It is said that Nut and Geb separated during the day, but when Nut would reach down to the earth in the evening to meet him, darkness would set in when she was away from the sky.



  Despite being siblings, Nut and Geb fell in love with each other. Yet their grandfather, the Sun God Ra, had heard a prophecy in which the children of Geb and Nut would one day overthrow him and as a result, tried to keep them apart. This was unsuccessful, as soon enough Nut had become pregnant, the father being Geb. Ra, learning of the news, forbade her from giving birth during the official Egyptian calendar year, which consisted of only 360 days in a year, had twelve months of thirty days, and twenty-four hours within those days. Nut then asked for help from Thoth, the god of the moon, scriptures, sciences (and much more). Supposedly, Thoth had also been in love with Nut so he immediately accepted her request. Thoth played dice with the moon and granted Nut five extra calendar days, preceding the New Year, in order for her to give birth to the five children (resulting in a year of 365 days). Her children, Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys, and Horus the Elder were not welcomed and were considered invaders in the deity world. As Ra had worried, Nut’s son Osiris had indeed replaced him in the throne.
