While mummies can be found all over the world--China, South America, Greenland--the typical Egyptian mummy is the most recognized of all. Ancient Egyptian people carefully preserved the bodies of the (rich) dead, building them tombs and filling their final resting places with all the wealth and supplies they could ever need for their journey to the afterlife. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the largest and oldest pyramid found in Egypt, is a great example of such tombs; it was built for Pharaoh Khufu, sometime around 2560 B.C.

With such extravagance, however, many of these tombs attracted grave robbers, so in order to try to protect the gold and riches within, the entrances were tightly sealed and traps were made. The most powerful traps of all were the curses. Whether or not the curses were real, it deterred many a potential thief away (most of the time).

The most well known curse is actually a modern day one: the Curse of Pharaoh Tutankhamen (a.k.a. King Tut). His tomb was untouched for thousands of years until 1922 when it was rediscovered by Howard Carter. It held many treasures and significant findings but shortly after the young pharaoho s tomb was opened, those who attended the opening of the tomb began to die. In the next several decades, King Tuto s o curseo presumably claimed twenty-six victims.

Such alleged mummy curses paved way for modern adaptations of horror books and movies, like The Mummy, or A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century by Jane C. Loudon; The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned by Anne Rice; The Mummy (1932), staring Boris Karloff; The Mummy (1959), staring Christopher Lee; and The Mummy (1999), staring Brandon Frasier (a personal favorite).
