Shading is important if you want your skin to look as realistic as possible. I use MCSkin3D to create my skins with. You can find the download on Paril's page: (here's the link) www.planetminecraft.com/mod/mcskin3d/
I like to primarily use the Darken/Lighten tool to shade my skins.

Not bad, but you should add some shading on the side of the body, under the hair and possibly inside of the arms, it will look a bit more natural like that. :)

Alright, no problem. Anyways, for the hands, try use something like this: http://www.planetminecraft.com/skin/tutorial-making-realistic-hands-very-useful-must-see/, but remember to flip the bottom vertically when you're done. :p
