During the plight of Thorin and his company of dwarves (as described in the classic 1937 novel "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien), the famous wizard Gandalf the Grey met with the great wizards of "The White Council", lead by the notorious and scheming wizard Saruman. They discussed that at the ruins of Dol Guldur, an evil stirred. Gandalf suggested that it be the Lord of the Rings, the dark lord Sauron, that was Dol Guldur's master, while Saruman (who desired Saurons evil talisman, the One Ring), disagreed with both the idea and a plan of attack. He thought that if he left Sauron in peace the Ring would make it's way to him eventually. Other wizards believed that one of Sauron's servants, the Nazgûl, was inhabiting the ruins and was searching for the ring. The Ring was at that time in the hands of the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who had discovered it in Gollum's cave.
