The Wretched

You wake up suddenly. You think back to the nightmare you just had and how close it had gotten to catching you. You push it out of your mind and settle back down when you notice the closet door is ajar. Did you leave it open? You go to step out of the bed to close it when something moves in the corner of your sight, what was that? The cat? You hear a strange growl, like a throat that needs clearing but deeper and angrier. You pull the duvet up to you. Your breath quickens, trying to match the speed at which your heart is beating. The growling moves closer to your bed, you press yourself up against the headboard. A dark shape emerges from the darkness. The first thing you see is the black gaping maw of the terrifying monstrosity, fangs coated in dried blood, flesh and saliva. The hot stench washes over you, suffocating your nostrils and causing you to gag. Then you see the eye, massive and abhorrent filling it's stomach, watching you, unblinking and determined to make tonight your last night on this Earth. You scream and hide under your duvet hoping to somehow force yourself through the bed and to safety. You hear your bedroom door fly open and see light filter through the sheets. You risk a look and find your mum standing by your bed confused. "There's nothing in here". You glance over and see that its gone. For now.
