Some lore of the Volksgrenadier-Divsions:

Following the disaster on the eastern front in 1944, where almost the entire German army group "center" has gotten destroyed, the Volksgrenadiers were founded in July 1944. Often confused with the Volkssturm, the Volksgrenadiers, other than the Volkssturm militia, were actual soldiers. Yet still being a last-ditch effort of the Germans to bring men to the frontline, the divisions were composed of men from all branches of the German military. Members of the Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht and Kriegsmarine fought side by side. Furthermore, the experience gap between the men was quite big. While some soldiers were veterans from the eastern front, others have just absolved training and until now, did not saw combat at all. This and poor leadership by the SS lead to little success of the Volksgrenadiers. However, it is interesting to noticed that most soldiers of the Volksgrenadiers were equipped with the Sturmgewehr 44, one of the first automatic rifles in history and the latest developed weapons by Germany.
