The Afrika Korps was the name given to the German and Italian soldiers in North Africa under the command of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, a veteran of the First World War. Rommel was respected by both sides during the war, due to his compassion for the enemy troops and his cunning strategies. A real risk-taker, Rommel's defeat was at the Egyptian city of El Alamein. He was later relegated to defending Normandy, but Hitler insisted that he use fixed bunkers and trenches to defend France. He was forced to commit suicide due to his involvement in the July plot.
The Afrika Korps were universally feared for their desert tactics and incredible fighting spirit. They were made up of a lot of veterans from the campaign in France and other theatres of Europe, thus making them experienced. Their pilots flew Ju 87s and Bf 109s, patrolling the skies for enemy planes. However, he most impotant part of the Afrika Korps was the armor, which was perfectly suited for desert warfare. Their mighty panzers ripped through the allied lines, crushing all resistance that they encountered.
