Although it does use predetermined functions, which can be problematic when it comes to some skins.
Take for example Dream's skin, it doesn't look very nice:
Also, it seems to be overall flawed when compared to manual work. Below is an image comparing the generated totem texture (left), and the one I made (right) for BadBoyHalo's skin.
