Sponges were added all the way back in Minecraft Classic where they could absorb water. In Minecraft Infdev water mechanics changed alongside sponges that became non-functional. They stayed in the game as a decoration block until release 1.8 where they could absorb water back again.
This texture pack brings back the pre-1.8 sponge texture and adds a new texture for wet sponges. I recommend using programmer art.
