As the Minecraft community grows there are less and less unique ideas and more people who don’t go out of their way to create something unique for the community. I’ve noticed this even more then usual lately as I browse the pages of content on PlanetMinecraft. When I first joined the site I, like many others, had a terrible server, with immature staff and I just wanted to advertise as much as possible. However, I was quickly drawn into the close community that comes along with the site and all the friendly and active members.

I used to do anything to get comments, diamonds and XP and give something to the people on PMC. I’d spend weeks and even months to get my project right. But theres always been a problem. PMC is just not that rewarding. Yes, we have a level system, however past level 20 the joy of XP fades.

Recently, I’ve been learning to Code. Not plugins, but Websites and apps for the iPhone. When I needed help I used a site called StackOverflow. Which is similar to PMC, in ways most don’t see. You can share content, comment, help people and when you do, you get XP. A small reward which encourages you to be more active, help people and post new content.

There is one major difference in the sites, and no it’s not the topic but the reward, not just being XP. The site allows you to unlock something other then just funny names and the ability to add ad.fly links to your work. Which is a load of crap by the way Paril. The site lets you to unlock features, which allow you to have a more enjoyable time on the site and give you more responsibility. I’m talking features like comments, bounties, unlocked profile features and more respect on the site.

Going back to my original point, I feel that the quality and standards of the content on PMC is slowly decreasing because users feel like they don’t have to put effort into their work, this is because even if you put 20 hours of work into a project, or only 15 minuets, you are always rewarded the same.

I feel that if people are given something to reach for, that makes their time and work mean something, they may be encouraged to put that extra bit of effort into a project and make it mean something. Simple rewards like being able to give an extra diamond if you are willing to give away some of your XP, or bounties, where you can ‘promote’ a project or have it featured in exchange for the XP that you worked for.

No matter how it happens, I feel that the XP and ‘rewards’ we get for posting quality content on PMC should mean something more then a status and a new name to stick next to your profile.

I think the only real reward you do and should get from posting on PMC are the comments from other members... who cares about the XP and the levels anyways? Okay, okay, you need them to do ad.fly links... wow..

Comments contain valuable feedback to bloggers about how they tell their stories, help texture pack makers and skinners get their artwork right, point out little tiny details to builders that post their in-game creations and to modders for troubleshooting and expansion of their mods.
That's the resonance I seek when posting and it is much more exciting to get notified that someone took their actual time to write (even if it's just a few words) something underneath a post.

I create content for the sake of creating it. Nothing more and nothing less. If PMC "rewards" me with a fancy title for posting it here it's a nice touch but does not by any means feel important to me. It's not what I'm going for at all.

XP should never be the thing that motivates you to put in more. If that is where your motivation comes from, you (at least in my opinion) do it for the wrong reasons.

I could very well live without the XP system entirely. After all, people are gonna recognize you by your name. not by a number next to it.

The levels are really just like a title. It really show your status. being level 90 is like saying, this guy is an expert at what he does. Being level one with 2 xp is like saying, new guy here.

Hmm, let's look at another perspective about PMC XP.

Let's say it is a psychological, motivational cat poster to keep you going forward on the site. The best analogy I am about to make is already self-explanatory in the gaming concept of 'levelling up'. Most if not all general games that introduce a level system will always promise more features and rewards when gaining levels. This is the internal drive that gives a new purpose of completing a game, that is, you will want to satisfy levelling up by grinding or exploring new things in the world. Like your opinion above, you would always expect better rewards granted as your level goes higher, which is only a very tiny part of the real picture.

With levels, people learn to recognise the 'better' players of the game and the 'noobs' or newcomers that they could teach. With increasing levels, the features you unlock may be directly status and class, but the hidden features are the reputation you earn, the rewards of skills and knowledge  that you refine when levelling up and the probability the top players or even developers of the game would invite you personally as part of their team.

PMC is exactly like this. It is a community of people with potential and practicality which you can recognise by their level. The rewards may not be just about unlocking adfly or a new class; it is the discovery experience when earning XP and the opportunities it provides that count. And cut the dramatic music, thank you.

I have to disagree a bit. I use PMC not for rewards, for sharing my content. I'm not forced to make my content, I find happiness in it and that's why I post it.

Also, even at lvl 54, whenever I get a subscriber I check their name, go to their page and just overall be happy, so I guess the joy is not only tied to XP, but to people appreciating your content, that's reward enough for meh.

Just my opinion anyways.

This blog post is amazing and the kind of stuff expected by people on the PMC community. I move seen a lot of blogs that are a complete waste of computor pixels, I just saw one recently that all it had was a guy screaming in all caps about him going to Minecon and seeing DanTDM (no offence to Dan TDM) with millions of explanation marks.

If you look at my comments blow, like I say to dog51848, as that user was making a blog post that has no effort put into it, you would downvote the post if you had the option, right? So if that downvote meant that user would loose maybe 2XP, they would feel the need to post more quality content in the future, and when they did decide to post that blog they would have put it in a more readable manner, to make it enjoyable for everyone. Hence, people would be pushed to make their submissions the best quality that they can.

There's not much else you can be given besides a status and new name. Besides if you're only here for the rewards like Foxy said you're missing the point. I could care less about all the rewards it's the community here that keeps me on it. I haven't played Minecraft for more than an hour or two in six months and I still enjoy being here.

There is much else that can be given. And 'reward' is a forward word for what I mean. I feel people with good content and people who are respected on the site should be given more responsibility on the site. On StackOverflow people who pass 500XP, about 25Levels here, they are added into the Editing Scheme, where when people make edits to peoples answers it is then approved/denied by people with more then 500XP.

I feel this small responsibility on the site will not just make people 'want rewards', because I know that that is not what the site is about. However I feel it will give people a reason to post more content as they are more involved in the site.

However, I know, responsibility has to be managed. If you give too much people tend to only focus on that and not post content, as like almost every moderator on the site. But if it is given is small bits then the community can manage, moderate and review the flagged, deleted and contest items on the site.

I feel that XP is a better punishment to take away then just stopping post upload permissions. People didn't have to do anything to upload posts, so they can just wait out the ban. However if people loose XP if they do something wrong, along with only a small 'We've took X xp for breaking the community guidelines, your post upload permissions have been removed for the rest of the day.'

Then to get out of that punishment and get back to where they were they have to earn their XP back. This should make people more reluctant to break the rules and post better content.
