How do you get a different base colour?

In Minecraft you craft colored banners by using colored wool (of one colour in the following crafting recipe:
[  wool  ][  wool  ][  wool  ]
[  wool  ][  wool  ][  wool  ]
[      ][   stick  ][      ]

The base colour will be the same as the colour of the wool you used to make it.
Note that you can see all these crafting steps on the right site of the banner description here.

If you mean to change the base colour on a banner in PlanetMinecraft, just click the showcase picture of that step (found left of "... Base"/first step description) then select the right color and click on the green check mark.
