11 July, more than just a regular day?

On 11 July, there was a notable battle on the Groeninghebattlefield nearby Courtray. The militia of the county Flanders was there to defend their soil against the army of the king of France. Pikemen and archers appeared to be capable of restraining a knight army, which was a remarkable thing.

Contemporaries named this event 'The battle of Courtray'. But time flew by and a new name occurred in the books. Authors gave it the name 'Battle of The Golden Spurs'. Named after all the golden spurs which were later found on the battlefield.

From the nineteenth century, the Flemish people beame more proud of their origin; the battle received its national character.

And now we, Flemish people, celebrate this day as a national day. One of the few dates where we can be proud of our military performances.

As some of you may know, I am a skinner who focuses on the Roman period. So I made a skin of a Celtic man, who was part of the Belgae tribe. In 1302, the Belgae would no longer exist, but the medieval Courtray was situated on their former soil.
