*WARNING!! YOU MAY KNOW OR ALREADY BE USING THESE METHODS!!*

1. Graphics: The most basic way to reduce lag is turn down your graphics settings.

Graphics --> Fast
Smooth Lighting --> Off
Render Distance --> Anything under far
Performance --> Max FPS
Particles --> Minimal

When opening the debug screen (F3), you can now press F3+Shift. I find that the new debug screen with the graphs brings down my frame rate.

2. OptiFine Mod: A popular mod that helps improve FPS, you've probably heard of it.

Let's you tweak EVERYTHING.

3. Gamebooster Application: Gamebooster shutsdown background process while you play, and completely free.

Game Booster 3 is capable of delivering the best gaming experience to you even if you have an old PC. One-click to boost PC performance is not enough, Game Booster 3 also allows you to tweak your system for top PC performance. By temporarily shutting background processes and unnecessary Windows services, cleaning RAM, and intensifying processor performance, Game Booster 3 concentrates every little system resource for gaming only.

Gamebooster has a placebo effect that your brain uses without knowing, it makes you think you see a difference but you don't. Also, it's easy to get rid of processes anyway. Lastly, if your computer has intel hd graphics (4000 series seem to do decent so it doesn't apply to them), then you probably can't run minecraft anyway, if it's a laptop you're out of luck. If it's a desktop you can buy a graphics card (don't go too high, prebuilt psu's wattage are usually very low) I suggest a 6670 or 6770 for low wattage psu's.
