PMC definitively appeals for the average minecrafter. This is where the community gathers and share their work/creations online. PMC allows you to interact and communicate with other members via their comment sections, submit section, the forums, the message system and their famous chat. The site was created by Cyprezz in 2010. His own words:

To be a member on PMC you have to agree on their term and use. Should be easy following their site regulations, but some members has been struggling with following these regulations. People such as me in the past.

My opinion on these rules and site regulations are fine. PMC are very strict with their site regulations and they makes sure you follow these rules.
Your work is safe on this site, no one will be able to steal from you or harass you in any way if you report the issues.
The PMC layout is really something for itself. With its famous planet minecraft icon and its nice minecraft looking appearance, the website has a nice shape and appearance. A minecrafter would definitely feel like he is in the right place.
The website got anything you would need as a minecrafter. Every category is listed up for you to just click and let the hyperlink take you were you wish. PMC has also a search bar where you can search whatever you are looking for. Simply type what you are looking for and it will bring up the most popular submission with you search as a tag. You can always adjust that to what kind of submissions you would like to find with that tag. Say you search: Modern house, you will get the most popular modern house submissions. You can adjust that to the most recent, most views, most downloads, which category etc.

-Site news & events: PMC hosts different contest entries every now and then, which is a great addition to bring the community together in a battle of skills, honor and dignity. On this list you will also see latest site news and features they have added.
-Popular reel: Both homepage and other pages that features different categories you have the popular reel. On this slideshow of amazingness you get up the most recent and popular submissions. A great addition to keep you updated with latest work our community has to offer.
-Forums: Every big site needs a forum section. The second most famous forum section in the minecraft community. Here you can ask for help or share ideas, work, contests, requests you name it. The pmc forums might be used a lot, but it is not the best you can find online. People always love to help, but its not every time you get the right persons to read your posts. Also it has a spam issue with members complaining about their ban on the site. Other times we have members who are not pleased with site regulations and they complain unprofessionally on the forums. There is not much we can do about this issue.
-Chat: The best community chat you can find online for now is the PMC chat. This is a place where you can meet members live every day. If you need help, someone to talk to, someone to share experiences with, somewhere to interact with members who are playing live on servers etc; Well, this is the place for you. You meet mostly professional and mature members here in the chat. It is highly guarded by moderators who you will always find in the chat.
The PMC chat always has a variation of members online. One day there might be 20 members, another day it might get up to 100 members. You might even meet some famous people there ;)
-LiveTV: The website offers quality streams on the liveTV page. It can be minecraft or any other game. Again, a nice addition to the site.
-Profile/account: This is your profile, a lovely place for you to visit on the site. Your submissions and profile information is saved on this page. You can write as much as you want about yourself on your profile. You can also link some of your other accounts/pages to your profile if you have any, sites such as youtube, twitter, devianart, steam and many other sites as you wish.
You have a level system on PMC, to get a higher level you have to earn exp points which gives some members a taste of competition and to work hard for appreciation.

My issue here is that people have problems finding these threads. Laziness and confusion might be some of the reasons. Therefore I suggest these people get some kind of guidance on this. Maybe a pop up window, e-mail or a message to give them some site information.
The site is actually very easy to use, either its submitting your work on the site or if you are searching for something.
But then again if you have problems finding and sharing work on planet minecraft, you have to ask people on the site or finding the required forum threads for that. There is always a thread explaining how to use the site, problem is to find them for people who have a hard time doing that. Again, I suggest they get a welcome e-mail or message so they can read that. Notifications are easy to spot. It could for example be featured in the account activation e-mail.
But for an experienced member to get around its very easy to use. Finding members and submissions is easy as well. Simply search the name in the members list as you would search for a submission in the search bar. But the members list have a problem, seems like it gets disable if you try clicking next and go further in the list. Error message: Disabled deep member listings.
Contacting the site team is very easy, you can either take contact by e-mail, skype or message them.

The site has become more popular over the years. You can find them on the most famous social media`s on the internet. Ever since social media`s started supporting and adding good features for groups, it has become easier to find different communities.

Conclusion
Best minecraft fan site out there? Yes, yes it is. Nothing comes close to Planet minecraft. The creator has thought about this carefully and done some good coding to make all this happen.
As much as I have complained about people having to ask and look here and there to find some information on the site, I can say its not that bad.
Its true you have it easier on other sites you are used to such as facebook, twitter or youtube since you get a full guide. But PMC want you to meet the community and talk with them by visiting people in the chat or messaging them. Its genius actually.
Also for members that are using mobile devices, Ipad`s etc. there should be considered a app for the site. Thats all

Agreement or Disclaimer
PMC has had huge success in the past years and doesnt seem like its coming to an end. But for how long will this last? How long does it take for people to lose interest in playing minecraft? There is no real answer for this, we just have to wait and see what happens. But as soon as minecraft gets unpopular, the fansite will follow the same path. Now this might take a long time or short time depends on competitors, interest, popularity or if the updates impresses the player or not.
But there is hope, some people are actually trying to use minecraft for education by recreating historical events or monuments and teach people how it was back then in a 3 dimension world.
